Lucinda Leplastrier is a frizzy-haired heiress who impulsively buys a glass factory with the inheritance forced on her by a well-intentioned adviser. In the early parts of this lushly written book, author Peter Carey renders the seminal turning points in his protagonists' childhoods as exquisite 19th-century set pieces. Young Oscar, denied the heavenly fruit of a Christmas pudding by his cruelly stern father, forever renounces his father's religion in favour of the Anglican Church. "Dear God," Oscar prays, "if it be Thy will that Thy people eat pudding, smite him!" Lucinda's childhood trauma involves a beautiful doll bought by her struggling mother with savings from the jam jar; in a misguided attempt to tame the doll's unruly curls, young Lucinda mutilates her treasure beyond repair. Neither of these coming-of-age stories quite explains how the grown-up Oscar and Lucinda each develop a guilty passion for gambling. Oscar plays the horses while at school, and Lucinda, now an orphaned heiress, finds comfort in a game of cards with an odd collection of acquaintances. When the two finally meet, on board a ship bound for New South Wales, they are bound by their affinity for risk, their loneliness and their awkwardly blossoming (but unexpressed) mutual affection. Inzwischen gilt er als bedeutendster lebender Schriftstellers Australiens. Er wurde neben J. M. Coetzee als einziger zweimal mit dem Booker Prize ausgezeichnet. Nach Melbourne, London und Sydney lebt er mittlerweile in New York. Er arbeitete zusammen mit Wim Wenders am Drehbuch für den Film "Bis ans Ende der Welt". Heute ist er Direktor des Programmes "Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing" am Hunter College, einer Abteilung der City University of New York. Jugendzeit, Ausbildung, erste Schreibversuche: Peter Carey wurde in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, im Jahre 1943 geboren. Seine Eltern betrieben ein Autohaus, Carey Motors. Er besuchte die Bacchus Marsh State School von 1948 bis 1953, danach besuchte er als Interner die Geelong Grammar School, ca. 50 km südwestlich von Melbourne, zwischen 1954 und 1960 bis zum Schulabschluß. Im Jahre 1961 schrieb sich Carey an der Monash University in Melbourne in Naturwissenschaften ein. Seine Hauptfächer waren Chemie und Zoologie. Er brach dieses Studium ohne Abschluss relativ schnell ab weil er kein Interesse an dem Studium fand. Im Jahre 1962 begann er in der Werbebranche zu arbeiten. Er arbeitete für verschiedene Werbeagenturen zwischen 1962 und 1967. Hier arbeitet er an Werbekampagnen unter anderem für Volkswagen und Lindeman's Winery. Es war die Arbeit in den Werbeagenturen, die ihn in Kontakt mit den Schriftstellern Barry Oakley und Morris Lurie brachte. Diese machten ihn mit den neuesten Literaturtrends in Europa und Amerika bekannt. Carey heiratete seine erste Frau Leigh Weetman im Jahre 1964. Während dieser Zeit las er intensiv, insbesondere beschäftigte er sich mit James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Franz Kafka und William Faulkner. Im Jahre 1964 begann er mit ersten eigenen Versuchen. Erste Erfolge als Schriftsteller: Während Carey weiter seinem Brotberuf als Werbemann nachging, schrieb und publizierte er Kurzgeschichten in Zeitschriften wie Meanjin und Nation Review. Die meisten dieser Kurzgeschichten erschienen in dem Buch The Fat Man In History (1974). Im Jahre 1974 ließ er sich von Weetman scheiden und zog nach Balmain, einem Stadtteil im Inneren Westen Sydneys, wo er für Grey's Advertising Agency arbeitete. Im Jahre 1976 ging er nach Queensland und schloss sich einer alternativen Gemeinschaft mit dem Namen "Starlight" in Yandina, Queensland, nördlich von Brisbane an.
