The 350 years that lie between the two events were filled with bloodshed, treachery, and the destruction of a people. The author documents the role of the white man in the creation of the myth of the bloodthirsty Apache. Although the first invasion of the SouthwestCoronado's expedition of 1540~1542 did not affect the Apache directly, they learned of the atrocities committed by the Spaniards and they felt them finally at first hand during the administration of Don Juan de Ofiate, who became the first governor of the territory of New Mexico in 1598. From then until the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, the Spanish conducted a reign of terror against the Indians, and this reign of terror continued unabated under the Mexicans. Nor was it alleviated when the United States occupied the Southwest in 1846. The venality that underlay the Spanish and Mexican atrocities against the Indians~desire for gold and land~was compounded and refined by the Americans, whose special interests sought to undermine any settlement of the Indian wars since these hostilities brought the army into the territory, and hence profits to speculators. Even when the Indians were put on reservations great profits were to be had by doctoring accounts of supplies bought and delivered to the reservations. The Indian Bureau was riddled with corruption, and a special group of profiteers~the Indian Ring of Tucson~had friends in Washington to protect their interests. In fact, it has been estimated that of the monies Congress appropriated for the Indians, only 5 to 20 percent actually reached them. Apache Chronicle outlines the history of 'the destruction of the Apache nation and at the same time gives a clear picture of the customs and ways of the people, the diversities of the various tribes within the Apache group, and the personalities of the great leaders: Mangas Coloradas, Cochise, Geronimo, to name only the most famous. That the Apache were unable to annihilate their enemies was in large part due to the intertribal rivalries that made it impossible for them to mount a united campaign. Their skill as warriors and raiders is attested to throughout the book, for in many encounters they were far outnumbered. But more than anything, Apache Chronicle shows what the Indian learned from the white man in terms of treachery and cruelty. The classic picture of the cruel Apache is in truth a simple reflection of the white invader who destroyed his lands and his people.
