Läsuren. - Englisch. - Band 2 / Volume II. - Alban Berg (* 9. Februar 1885 in Wien, Österreich-Ungarn; 24. (wiki) // A front-page story in the New York Times described the first performance of the complete three-act Lulu in Paris on February 24,1979, forty-three years after the composer's death, as "perhaps the most important and glamorous operatic premiere since World War II." In this long-awaited second volume of his monumental study of Berg's two operas (the first volume, Wozzeck, was the winner of two prestigious awards, the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award and the Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society) Perle presents a comprehensive discussion of the literary source of Lulu, Frank Wedekind's controversial "tragedies of sex," Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box, in the context of an overview of Wedekind's remarkable life and work; shows how Berg, through his libretto and through his music, transformed the two Lulu-plays into what the author regards as "the supreme masterpiece of the lyric theater"; shows how intimately the opera is related to Berg's own life and times; disposes of the holy legend of his life and work that the composer's widow perpetuated with complete success during the forty-one years by which she survived her husband, and unravels, for the first time, the extraordinarily complicated posthumous history of the opera and Mrs. Berg's motivations in suppressing the third act; and, most important, subjects the work to an exhaustive analysis, in the context of a detailed study of all of Berg's music- an analysis which strongly supports Perle's claim that "Berg was the most forward-looking composer of our century" and that he "progressed further than anyone else in the direction of a comprehensive and coherent formulation of post-diatonic compositional procedures." The two volumes are far more than a study of Wozzeck and Lulu: together they constitute the most thorough and comprehensive survey we have of Berg's music as a whole and of his life and character.
