Añadir al carritoThis is a stated first US edition of Baron Philippe: The Very Candid Autobiography of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Rothschild (1902-1988) co-wrote the book with his companion, the British writer and theater director Joan Littlewood (1914-2002) Philippe, Baron de Rothschild was a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty who became a Grand Prix race-car driver, a screenwriter and playwright, a theatrical producer, a film producer, a poet, and one of the most successful wine producers in the world. He led a fascinating life and this is an excellent book. This copy (331 pages) has no dust jacket and the spine is somewhat faded, as is the gold lettering on the spine. Inside, the book was pressed open to the center photo spread, and again at another photo spread at the back of the book. Other than that, there's no evidence that it was read. All of the pages are clean, clear and creamy white.

SYNOPSIS: As rare, warm, tantalizing and provocative as the wine he loves, Baron Philippe de Rothschild's autobiography is an irresistible delight to be savored and enjoyed. A best seller in England, critics have called Baron Philippe racy, arch and disarmingly boastful and marveled at the glee he takes in the scandals he has provoked and at his shameless descriptions of countless romantic conquests. Whether he's confessing to private grief or public scandal, Baron Philippe de Rothschild shares his secrets with unbridled enthusiasm. Packed with spicy stories, many a tad wicked and all unabashedly revealing, this is a deliciously different and totally entertaining memoir. Still going strong at the age of eighty-three--"I often think of myself as a boy in an old man's body"--Baron Philippe de Rothschild remains a bon vivant whose passion for wine, women and fast cars has never masked his business genius or his courage in the face of adversity. He writes frankly about his wild boyhood--"I earned my reputation, the worst in Paris"--and his pride at being entrusted with the management of the family vineyards when he was twenty. At this tender age, Philippe began building his empire and in a few years his innovations at Mouton had revolutionized the wine industry. But this is not only a story of victories and high living. When the Nazis marched into Paris in 1940, Philippe fled to Morocco, where he was imprisoned for eight months. Since his family was Jewish, their property was confiscated. Philippe eventually made a daring escape, enlisted in the army of the Free French and at war's end learned that his wife had perished in a concentration camp. His seemingly boundless energy remains undiminished today. Most recently he has teamed with California vintner Robert Mondavi to produce a fabulous wine from a French grape grown in the Napa Valley. Baron Philippe is the product of a unique collaboration between raconteur Baron Philippe de Rothschild and writer Joan Littlewood, one of the founders of Britain's Theatre Workshop, who has been called the "wild woman of British theatre." A pivotal force in the development of twentieth-century theatre, she now lives in Vienne, France. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
