Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Poor. The Format is approximately 9.75 inches by 13.5 inches. [16] 302, [2] pages. Index. Corners bumped and edges worn through the cloth in places. Portfolio of photographs. Illustrated with over 175 photographs, many of them reproduced for the first time and made directly… from Edward Curtis's own glass-plate negatives and original prints. DJ has a large image of an American Indian. DJ is very worn, torn, soiled and chipped. The caption to all Curtis photographs both in the text section and in the portfolio section are either is own or have been taken from his own writings in The North American Indian volumes. The account of Curtis's life is drawn from his own writings, including the log he kept on his trip to Alaska for material for his final volume; from the notes and recollections of this daughter, and from the voluminous thirty-year correspondence between Curtis and Frederick Webb Hodge of the Smithsonian Institution, the editor of his volumes. Florence Curtis Graybill was the daughter of Edward Sheriff Curtis. Combined with this text are over 175 incomparable Curtis photographs as well as some rare pictures of Curtis himself in the field from family collections. Ninety-six of these Curtis photographs are printed in a 192 special portfolio section. Many have never been reproduced before. Florence Curtis Graybill, became a newspaper reporter. She was renown for her lectures on her father's work. Victor Boesen was also a newspaper reporter. During WWII he wrote for Liberty magazine. Edward Sheriff Curtis (February 19, 1868 October 19, 1952) was an American photographer and ethnologist whose work focused on the American West and on Native American people. Sometimes referred to as the "Shadow Catcher", Curtis traveled the United States to document and record the dwindling ways of life of various native tribes through photographs and audio recordings. Curtis left school in the sixth grade and soon built his own camera. In 1895, Curtis met and photographed Princess Angeline (c. 18201896), also known as Kickisomlo, the daughter of Chief Sealth of Seattle. This was his first portrait of a Native American. In 1898, three of Curtis's images were chosen for an exhibition sponsored by the National Photographic Society. Two were images of Princess Angeline, "The Mussel Gatherer" and "The Clam Digger". The other was of Puget Sound, entitled "Homeward", which was awarded the exhibition's grand prize and a gold medal. In that same year, while photographing Mount Rainier, Curtis came upon a small group of scientists who were lost and in need of direction. One of them was George Bird Grinnell, considered an "expert" on Native Americans by his peers. Curtis was appointed the official photographer of the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899, probably as a result of his friendship with Grinnell. Having very little formal education Curtis learned much during the lectures that were given aboard the ship each evening of the voyage. Grinnell became interested in Curtis's photography and invited him to join an expedition to photograph people of the Blackfoot Confederacy in Montana in 1900. In 1906, J. P. Morgan provided Curtis with $75,000 to produce a series on Native Americans. This work was to be in 20 volumes with 1,500 photographs. Morgan's funds were to be disbursed over five years and were earmarked to support only fieldwork for the books, not for writing, editing, or production of the volumes. Curtis received no salary for the project, which was to last more than 20 years. Under the terms of the arrangement, Morgan was to receive 25 sets and 500 original prints as repayment. Once Curtis had secured funding for the project, he hired several employees to help him. For writing and for recording Native American languages, he hired a former journalist, William E. Myers. For general assistance with logistics and fieldwork, he hired Bill Phillips, a graduate of the University of Washington and Alexander B. Upshaw a member of the Absaroke tribe ('Crow'. Jean-Antony du Lac (Preparer of the photographs) (ilustrador).
