With 278 plates, 22 in color, and 4 maps. Further Reading. Notes on the text. Glossary. Index. A survey of Irish domestic architecture from 1100 to 19…14, covering all types of dwellings and architectural styles. The contents include: Early domestic buildings 1100-1600; From the Plantations to Cromwell 1585-1660; From the Restoration to the Battle of the Boyne 1660-1690; The sixty years of peace after Boyne 1690-1750; The lack of a master hand 1750-1780; Neo-Classicism comes to Ireland 1780-1800; From the Union to the Famine 1801-1846; and Victorian and Edwardian building in Ireland 1846-1914. De Breffny, Brian (193189), architectural historian, genealogist, and author, was born Brian Michael Lees on 14 January 1931. From 1957 he lived on the island of Ischia, and then at via Fratina 10, Rome, from where he ran a successful business tracing family and ancestral pedigrees. After moving to Ireland he lived first in Castletown Conolly and then in Leixlip Castle. He was a frequent contributor as well as a director of the Irish Ancestor. Among his published works are A bibliography of Irish family history and genealogy (1974), The houses of Ireland (1975, jointly with Rosemary ffolliott), The Irish world (1977), The land of Ireland (1979), The churches and abbeys of Ireland (1976), In the steps of St Patrick (1982), and Ireland: a cultural encylopaedia (1983). He co-founded, with Ann Reihill, a quarterly arts magazine, the Irish Arts Review (1984). From the 1950s, Rosemary ffolliott (born 1935; died March 12th 2009) was on the panel of freelance researchers engaged by the Genealogical office, becoming a prominent member of the Irish Genealogical Research Society whose journal she edited for a time. She revised A Simple Guide to Irish Genealogyby Fr Wallace Clare, the founder of the society, the first guide book published in Irish family history, writing what was virtually a new book. Her dedication to a discipline that had been considered vague, imprecise and colorful, had an acknowledged effect in raising the standards of genealogy in Ireland. Her research methods were meticulous and she is remembered as a genius in the use of the Registry of Deeds in Henrietta Street. In 1966 she became a Fellow of the Irish Genealogical Research Society, the first woman to be recognized in this way. 1n 1969, she began the editorship of The Irish Ancestor, which continued publication until 1986. The journal was an eclectic assembly of genealogical matters, family trees, inventories and histories, passenger lists, tombstones, journals, and abstracts of wills combined with articles on the very many subjects on which Rosemary was an authority such as architecture, furniture, gate lodges or gardens. In 1975 she co-wrote, with Brian de Breffny, The Houses of Ireland, which demonstrated her belief that "the history of a house shall not be separated from that of the people who built and lived in it, and thus domestic architecture cannot be divorced from family history, social history and political events". Derived from a brief Kirkus review: A spectacularly illustrated -- with photographs by George Mott -- Studio book on the mansions, towers, thatched cabins and bishops' palaces of Ireland. The authors supply a wealth of historical and architectural detail and from the costs and construction materials alone much can be learned about Ireland's past. A stylish and elegant book. George Mott (ilustrador).
