Inferno is the first part of Italian writer Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy. It is followed by Purgatorio and Paradiso. The Inferno describes Dante's journey through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. This Imprint includes bright vibrant color pictorials. Overall, a gorgeous edition. // Tom Phillips (1937?2022) was a highly-regarded British painter, printmaker, and polymath whose work fused visual art, literature, and music in erudite, self-referential ways. A Royal Academician and translator of Dante, he is best known for A Humument (1966?2016), a lifelong project transforming W. H. Mallock?s Victorian novel A Human Document into a richly layered visual-textual palimpsest. Phillips?s art, often exploring systems, chance, and the interplay of text and image, spanned painting, collage, opera design, and portraiture?including a celebrated portrait of Iris Murdoch in the National Portrait Gallery?and his influence extended across the British conceptual and book-arts movements of the late twentieth century. // **Heavy item. Additional shipping fees may be needed for expedited or international orders. Please inquire**. Deaccession library copy in well-rubbed boards with usual institutional markings to front endpapers and spine. Overall a good(+) reading copy in a slightly cocked but tight binding. Original page-mark ribbon bound in. Pages clean.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Painter/composer/bookmaker (the good kind) Tom Phillips spent years producing 138 prints for this illustrated accompaniment to Dante's classic tale. While the deluxe version would cost a mid-80s art lover some 10,000 pounds, this first popular American edition was priced far more reasonably. As ever, the practicalities of shelfwear have left their mark through the decades with light foxing to the crown and some rubbing and crimping of the (unclipped) dust jacket, but the care taken to preserve the bright, taut inner pages of the book itself feels even more pronounced by comparison. See photos.
