Soft cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. English text.; Paperback.; 16 x 23.5 cm.; 0.5 kg.; 240 pages with black and white illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior. The interior as an ex-library stamp on title page and a few pages underlined with a pen. The remaining interior is in very good condition. Good r…eadable copy.; Unabridged republication of the limited English, 1923 edition.; Art historians and collectors have upheld this judgment on the beauty and fineness of Ming ceramics. Even early Chinese writers and collectors spoke highly of Ming porcelains, and some of the Ming reigns have been unanimously voted the classic periods of porcelain manufacture. First published in 1923 and now a classic reference work much sought-after by collectors, Orientalists and serious ceramicists, this book is an indispensable guide to the wares of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Written by one of the foremost scholars in the field, it explains and illustrates the many varieties of Ming. Besides the extremely famous blue and white porcelain associated with this period, and which influenced ceramic design all over the world, Hobson examines the many other lesser-known varieties and shapes of Ming wares. In regard to the use of polychrome, for instance, Hobson writes, "There is nothing in the period finer than the best of this Ming polychrome." The 117 illus- ceramics of any period f trations, 9 in full color, are all scrupulously authentica authenticated pieces from outstanding public and private collections. The first 12 chapters of this book are occupied almost exclusively by the porcelain of Ching-tê Chên; the next four by the porcelain and pottery made at other centers. Hobson begins with an introductory chapter entitled "Ming, What It Is and What It Is Not," and goes on to examine Ming technique. The material is then arranged historically, from the reign of Hung Wu to Wan Li and the final reigns of the Ming dynasty. The author then examines Fukien wares, the survivors of the Sung potteries, and various other pottery centers, The final chapter is devoted to marks, inscriptions and Chinese characters with translations and references. The 117 illustrations with their careful, descriptive captions show the many shapes and sizes of Ming wares from numerous bowls, dishes with a narrow rim which have a character all their own, to wide-mouth jars, high-shouldered vases, tall beakers, incense burners, etc. The 9 full-color illustrations show the chief Ming colors. R. L. Hobson was an Assistant in the British Museum and later Keeper of the Department of Oriental Antiquities and Ethnography. An internationally recognized authority, he was the author of many definitive books and articles including the two-volume Chinese Pottery and Porcelain.
