The author argues that the novelists frequently borrowed elements and plot from the poets but often altered and updated them in keeping with the detailed realism of prose fiction. The author provides many examples of these parallels, such as the character of Daphnis in the romance by Longus and a poem of the same name by Theocritus. The reader gains an enhanced understanding of the literary techniques and influences that informed the Greek love story as a genre.
