Early in 1931 much of the New Zealand coastal city of Napier, in Hawkes Bay, was destroyed in an earthquake. Particularly hard hit was the central commercial area and 258 people died. Although it was Great Depression time rebuilding the city was quickly underway and in some ways the experience of Santa Barbara, California, which been devestated by earthquake six years earlier, provided the model. Thus, today both Napier and Santa Barbara are regarded as the best examples of Art Deco architecture extant and for both this is an important part of their heritage. In this fine book in praise of Napier's Art Deco buildings Peter Shaw provides the backgrond text, 12 pages, and Peter Hallett imaginative and dramatic colour exterior and interior photos of these iconic buildings, commercial and residential. 80 pages including glossary, index, 125 colour photos, 15 b/w pre 'quake photos with text, street plan, decorative e/papers. Laminated colour pictorial hard covers NF. ditto text bloclk, no inscriptions. Colour pictorial DJ is VG+.
