This book centres on the Act of Settlement passed by the English Parliament in 1701, which dictated the succession to the English throne after the death of Queen Anne. The act established that the Protestant line of the House of Hanover would succeed the throne after Anne. While the author agrees with the necessity of securing the Protestant succession, he argues that certain provisions within the act, such as the need for the monarch to be in communion with the Church of England, were unnecessary and could potentially lead to conflict. The author's analysis and historical perspective offer insights not only into the Act of Settlement itself but also into questions around religious freedom and constitutional monarchy within the British context.
