Latin Text and English Translation on facing pages. Introduction. Notes. 7 Appendices. Glossary. religion. theology. philosophy. psychology. scholasticism. ~ The Summa Theologice ranks among the greatest documents of the Christian Church. It provides the framework for Catholic studies in systematic theology and for a classical Christian philosophy. The purpose, then, of this edition is not narrowly ecclesiastical, but to share with all Christians this treasury of wisdom which is part of their common heritage. Moreover, it consults the interests of many who, without claiming to be believers, appreciate a religious integrity which embodies hardbitten rationalism and who recognise in St Thomas a master of that perennial philosophy which, though not confined to the West, is the foundation on which our civilisation is built. Because of this the editors worked under specific instructions to bear in mind not only the professional theologian, but also the general reader with an interest in the 'reasons' in Christianity. The publication of the Latin text along with the English will be reassuring to readers with a smattering of Latin, and has the advantages of permitting the translator somewhat more freedom in adapting the text in translation to the understanding of contemporary minds. Accordingly a literal translation is not offered, instead the editors, many from long experience of teaching the text, attempt to put its thought into contemporary English, so far as the technicalities allow, and these are taken and explained, not avoided by circumlocution. The Latin is a sound working text, selected, paragraphed, and punctuated by the responsible editor. Important variations, of manuscripts and such major printed editions as the Piana and Leonine, are indicated. St Thomas's own references are given, together with cross~references to other parts of the SUMMA and to his other works. The English corresponds paragraph by paragraph and usually sentence by sentence; so far as possible the same punctuation is observed. Paraphrase is avoided, and there are explanatory footnotes at points where the reader might be held up. The introduction puts a treatise in its general setting and relates it to the general structure of the SUMMA. Appendices discuss questions arising from the text ~ they are not encyclopaedic, but meant to relate St Thomas's teaching to that of his predecessors and to later developments. Each volume contains a glossary of technical terms and is designed to be complete in itself to serve for private study or as the text~book for a special course.
