Susan Strasser is Richards Professor Emerita of American History at the University of Delaware, praised by the New Yorker for retrieving what history discards ? the taken-for-granted minutiae of everyday life. Her other books include Satisfaction Guaranteed: The Making of the American Mass Market and Waste and Want: A Social History of Trash. Never Done won the Sierra Prize of the Western Association of Women Historians. First published in 1982 and widely regarded as the first serious history of American housework, the book covers roughly a century of domestic labour, moving from the physical reality of mid-nineteenth-century household work through to the mid-twentieth century, tracing what changed, what was gained, and what was quietly lost along the way. The opening sections establish the baseline with considerable force. Housework in the pre-industrial period was unrelenting physical labour: cooking over open fireplaces and cast-iron stoves, hauling and heating water, ironing with heavy flatirons, tending fires, making soap, preserving food, and performing an annual spring cleaning intensive enough to constitute a major domestic event. Strasser is careful to show that this work was not simply hard but structurally central to household survival. The pre-industrial household produced much of what it consumed, and the woman who managed it was engaged in genuine production rather than mere maintenance. The arrival of industrialization is the book's central pivot. Strasser's argument is that the relationship between technology and domestic labour is considerably more complicated than the standard narrative of progressive liberation suggests. New machines and commercial products did eliminate some tasks and ease others, but they also created new standards of cleanliness and new forms of labour to meet them. Running water removed the burden of hauling but generated the expectation of daily bathing. Factory-made food eliminated hours of preserving but introduced new shopping and management responsibilities. The net reduction in labour time was, Strasser argues, far more modest than manufacturers of labour-saving devices claimed, and the ideology surrounding those devices served commercial interests as much as domestic ones. A substantial section examines domestic service ? the paid labour of women, overwhelmingly working class and disproportionately Black and immigrant, who performed housework in other people's homes. Strasser treats the mistress-servant relationship as a significant and largely overlooked dimension of American social history, tracing how the gradual decline of domestic service through the early twentieth century shifted the burden of housework onto middle-class women while simultaneously making that work invisible and unpaid in a new way. The book gives equal attention to the rise of advertising and home economics as twin forces that reshaped the ideology of domestic labour. Advertisers promoted an ideal of the modern homemaker as a technically informed consumer and manager of household systems; home economists gave domestic work a veneer of scientific credibility without fundamentally altering its social status. Both, Strasser suggests, served to naturalize women's labour rather than to question or redistribute it. Critical reception was and remains enthusiastic. The Los Angeles Times Book Review called it a work of genius and marvellous to read, and it has remained in continuous use in courses on American social history, women's history, and the history of technology for over four decades.
