"Ms. Whedon began her radio and television career in 1952 as assistant producer of "ABC College News Conference." In 1958, when the program won a Peabody award for youth television programming, the show's producer and moderator, Ruth Hagy, insisted that Ms. Whedon, her "girl Friday," also take a bow. In 1960, she became producer of the "Issues and Answers" Sunday newsmagazine, and she is credited with being the first woman to regularly produce a television news series. She had overall editorial responsibility for the program, and she was awarded a Peabody for her work in 1968. She continued to produce that program until it went off the air." Peggy Whedon, the producer of ABC News' Issues and Answers, has been hobnobbing with the great and the near great since 1960. She has taken the hand of five presidents of the United States; disagreed with leaders of Congress, Labor, and Big Business; and probed for economic forecasts from industrial and banking giants. Behind the show's low-key presentation are often dramatic surprises such as earthquakes, bombings, blizzards, shootings, heat prostration, and frozen toes. Here the reader accompanies Peggy Whedon through two decades of history-in-the-making.
