Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 240 pages. Published in 1983. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents James Wilcox's "Modern Baptists". His now-classic first novel: American comic genius fully imagined and brilliantly realized. Here, for the first time, is the fictional, unforgettably, lovably weird community of Tula Springs, Louisiana, described by the author with profound depths of vulnerable feeling, not just empathy. "The tale of Bobby Pickens, Assistant Manager of Sonny Boy Bargain Store, who gains a new lease on life although he almost comes to regret it. Bobby's very handsome half-brother F. X. , ex-con, ex-actor, and ex-husband three times over, moves in. Things go awry all over town: Mistaken identities, entangled romances, assault and battery, charges of degeneracy, a nervous breakdown. It all comes to a head at a Christmas Eve Party in a cabin on a poisoned swamp. Sly, madcap romp that offers readers the gift of abundant laughter" (US News And World Reports). It is a crying shame that "Modern Baptists" and James Wilcox's entire body of work have not received the kind of universal recognition that they so richly deserve, otherwise accorded too many inferior, undeserving writers, products of American media hype. The reason is that he writes social comedy - there is no other kind in literature - which is looked down upon as the lesser art, not to be taken seriously, except, of course, by readers and critics who do take literature seriously. An absolute "must-have" title for James Wilcox collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the front free endpaper by James Wilcox. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection (slight browning on DJ corners and spine, but it's there) is still in especially fine condition: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws (price-clipped is endemic), are in subsequent editions, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. "Modern Baptists" is regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the canonical works of the 20th century. Selected by Toni Morrison as one of her "Favorite Works by Unsung Writers". Selected by GQ Magazine as one of the greatest American novels of the 20th century. One of the finest writers of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy.
