There are a bright spots - chess games with Pastor Cale, his girl Martha trope, and, of course, the though of his future as owner of the Running W. Yet even his gentle courtship of Martha is threatened by the appearance of Jesse Howard, a rude and common cowboy, and a bitter rivalry develops.
