In this respect it is not a sequel to Kon~Tiki, Aku~Aku, The Ra Expeditions, or Fatu Hiva. Early Man and the Ocean is an anthology of reports and speeches previously published independently, which I have here combined and edited to form a coherent book. The original idea of such a composition came from Dr. Karl Jettmar, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Heidelberg, and a German version edited by him was published in 1975 under the title Zwischen den Kontinenten. It was hoped that the book would give guidance to the many people who have followed the discussions about human migration routes and cultural origins that developed in the wake of the primitive vessels Kon~Tiki and Ra when they, contrary to expert opinion given in advance managed to traverse the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.

It was Heyerdahl who led the first full~scale archaeological dig on Easter Island~and helped solve the age~old riddle of that loneliest and most mysterious of islands. And it was Heyerdahl who piloted Ra II, an Egyptian reed boat, from North Africa to the shores of the Caribbean~proving that men from the earliest known civilizations could have reached the New World by sea. These adventures and discoveries have revolutionized our understanding of early man~and the papers collected here present a fascinating survey of Heyerdahl's pioneering work . its stunning diversity and its startling implications about the role of deep~sea navigation in the spread of culture throughout the ancient world. The result is a challenging and exciting look at early man and the ocean~a record of the extraordinary scientific evidence collected by one of the world's most ingenious and celebrated explorers. With illustrations, maps, bibliography, notes, and index.
