This book documents the author's investigation into the temperature coefficients of metals and alloys relevant to their use as elastic elements for aircraft and instruments. The author expands on the work of Brombacher and Melton but instead of the torsion pendulum they used, the author employs helical spring specimens. The results of the author's novel approach yield data on the temperature coefficients of both the rigidity modulus and Young's modulus of elasticity from the same specimen of a given material. The study is unique in that the experiments measure both the initial and changing deformation of the springs as temperature varies, and account for internal stresses within the springs themselves as well as experimental error from a number of sources. Also unique is the extrapolation of data to zero initial de- or extension. The book concludes with the measured temperature coefficients of rigidity and Young's modulus of elasticity at 0° C for 31 alloys and pure metals and the thermal coefficient of expansion for each of those materials.
