Paperback. Condición: As New. There are books that explain how computers work, and there are books that explain why computers exist at all. The Cogwheel Brain belongs firmly to the second category. Long before silicon chips, touchscreens and the internet convinced us that technology was inevitable, there was Charles Babbage, a Victorian mathematician with an inconvenient habit of believing that machines could think through arithmetic using nothing more exotic than brass gears, cams and astonishing quantities of determination. Doron Swade tells the story of the man whose greatest invention was so far ahead of its time that it had to wait more than a century for everyone else to catch up. Swade is uniquely qualified to tell the tale, having led the project to construct a working version of Babbage?s Difference Engine from the original nineteenth-century designs, giving him an unusually practical appreciation of just how ambitious?and maddening?the whole enterprise really was. This is history at its most delightfully mechanical. Government funding disappears, engineers argue, precision manufacturing proves infuriatingly difficult, politicians lose interest and deadlines drift gently into the distance. Anyone who has ever managed an IT project may find the experience oddly familiar, except that today?s software bugs have been replaced with cast iron, brass bearings and the occasional ton of Victorian engineering. It is oddly reassuring to discover that the phrase "the project has run into unexpected complications" predates Microsoft by quite some distance. The irony at the heart of the book is irresistible. Babbage dreamed of eliminating human error from mathematical tables by replacing unreliable people with reliable machinery. Two centuries later we use astonishingly powerful descendants of his ideas to argue with strangers online, forget our passwords and watch videos of cats falling off sofas. Progress, it seems, occasionally takes the scenic route. Swade writes with genuine affection for both the machines and the man behind them. Rather than presenting Babbage as a flawless prophet of the computer age, he reveals an eccentric, brilliant, frequently exasperating inventor whose vision was matched only by his ability to fall out with those expected to finance it. The result is a biography, a history of engineering, a meditation on invention and an unexpectedly human story about what happens when extraordinary ideas collide with ordinary bureaucracy. Our As New copy is in excellent condition, clean, crisp and ready to occupy a deserving place on the shelf of anyone fascinated by computing, mathematics, engineering or the strange history of ideas that almost changed the world a century too early. Whether you work in technology, enjoy biographies of remarkable minds, or simply like discovering that the first computer was conceived in an age when steam power was still considered cutting-edge, The Cogwheel Brain is a rewarding and surprisingly entertaining read. It reminds us that every smartphone owes a quiet debt to a Victorian gentleman surrounded by cogwheels, mathematical tables and an optimism that refused to accept the word "impossible." As sold by Crappy Old Books , where even the oldest ideas occasionally turn out to be decades ahead of schedule. …

Hardcover. In 1821, 30-year-old inventor and mathematician Charles Babbage was poring over a set of printed mathematical tables with his friend, the astronomer John Herschel. Finding error after error in the manually evaluated results, Babbage made an exclamation, the consequences of which would not only dominate the remaining 50 years of his life, but also lay the foundations for the modern computer industry: 'I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam!' A few days later, he set down a plan to build a machine that would carry out complex mathematical calculations without human intervention and, at least in theory, without human errors. The only technology to which he had access for solving the problem was the cogwheel escapement found inside clocks. Babbage saw that a machine constructed out of hundreds of escapements, cunningly and precisely linked, might be able to handle calculations mechanically. The story of his lifelong bid to construct such a machine is a triumph of human ingenuity, will and imagination. These are USED books. Please only purchase if you are happy with that.
