Rolf Hochhuth is best known for his 1963 drama 'The Deputy' and remains a controversial figure for his plays and other public comments, such as his insinuation of Pope Pius XII's indifference to Hitler's extermination of the Jews in that play. Hochhuth's next play, Soldiers (1967) , alleged that Winston Churchill was responsible for the death of the Polish Prime Minister, General Wladyslaw Sikorski, in an airplane crash in 1943, contradicting the official version of events as an accident, and claiming that General Sikorski had been murdered on Churchill's orders. Hochhuth's hope was that the play would contribute to a debate on the ethics of the area bombing of civilian areas by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, with particular reference to Operation Gomorrah, the Royal Air Force raids on Hamburg in 1943, culminating in a lengthy and invented debate between Winston Churchill and the pacifist George Bell, Bishop of Chichester. The play partially drew on the work of young British author David Irving, later known as a Holocaust denier. Irving and Hochhuth have been long-standing friends. 'Tell '38' presents a speech given by Hochhuth on the occasion of his receipt of Switzerland's most prestigious literary award, the Basel Arts Prize. Hochhuth used this occasion to pay the first public tribute to a young Swiss theology student named Maurice Bavaud who was beheaded on May 14, 1941 in Berlin for attempting to assassinate Hitler. Bavaud's attempt, which was thwarted purely by chance, was most certainly a suicide mission. This book represents a tribute to Bavaud's life and death and presents all the relevant documents related to Bavaud's arrest and trial, which are gathered here along with Hochhuth's acceptance speech. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; vi, 158 pages.
