The first full scale biography of one of America's leading composers of the 20th century, the man who, according…to Aaron Copland, made indigenous American opera possible. With Copland and Virgil Thomson, Marc Blitzsteint 1905-1964 attempted in the twenties to forge an authentic American classical music that was not just an importing of European traditons. Under the impact of the Great Depression, Blitzstein turned to a more populist language and wrote opera that was more than an ornament and amusement for the rich and upper classes, opera that spoke to the common people of America, as Verdi and Puccini in their day had spoken to the common people of Italy. Out of this would cme his most spectacular theatrical coups: the Cradle Will Rock directed by Orson Welles and Produced by John Houseman, which undoubtedly had the most famous opening night in the history of Broadway, as the federal government as well as the theatre and music unions all tried to prevent it (created such furore on its opening and lead ultimately to the dismantling of the Federal Theater Project.); and Regina, adapted from Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes. Following his World War II stint in the Air Force, Blitzstein continued to write cantatas, operas, musicals, and song cycles, mostly on socially relevant themes, as well as translating The Threepenny Opera for its famous Off-Broadway production starring Lotte Lenya, which ran for six years. This biography stands as the definitive statement of his work and life. Includes Preface, Epilogue, Notes, and List of Works.
