Añadir al carritoHard Cover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Jacket price clipped, sticker remnant on front endpaper. 1971 Hard Cover. x, 188 pp. Richard B. Schwartz shows Johnson as a man deeply involved with the new science, treading a carefully considered middle ground between the province of science and that of religion and morality. Schwartz shows Johnson to have approved of the Baconian scientific methodology, its utilitarian orientation, and its Modern triumphs. Like so many of Bacon's successors, however, Johnson was skeptical of cooperative projects and unduly hasty results. Johnson assailed the Restoration and eighteenth-century satirists of science, and took pains to defend science, even in its most trifling forms.

Richard B. Schwartz shows Johnson as a man deeply involved with the new science, treading a carefully considered middle ground between the province of science and that of religion and morality. His conclusions shed new light on Johnson's thought and intellectual temper; they enhance our understanding of eighteenth~century intellectual history and the relationships between science and literature; and they bring new understanding to several of Johnson's important literary works. In the Restoration and the eighteenth century, literary figures often satirized science and scientists. Traditional moralists sometimes mistrusted science, while the heterodox tended to overtrust it. Johnson, it is shown, allowed himself no extreme, distinguishing carefully between the legitimate realms of science and those of religion and morality. Schwartz shows Johnson to have approved of the Baconian scientific methodology, its utilitarian orientation, and its Modern triumphs. Like so many of Bacon's successors, however, Johnson was skeptical of cooperative projects and unduly hasty results. Johnson assailed the Restoration and eighteenth~century satirists of science, and took pains to defend science, even in its most trifling forms. He believed that science can reinforce religious belief by providing evidence for the existence of God. Although he seriously questioned the possibility of achieving secular utopias, Johnson carefully indicated the ways in which science can relieve human suffering and facilitate the practice of Christian charity. Professor Schwartz, employing an admirable command of the relevant literature on Johnson, as well as the whole canon of Johnson's works (including some only recently attributed to him), has thus produced a work which not only illuminates Johnson's intellectual temper, but which must cause many of us to reassess Johnson's attitudes toward broader areas of human faith and intellectual endeavor. This book, in addition to providing essential material for Johnson scholars, offers much to scholars of the history of science and modern European intellectual history.
