Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Jacket by Wendy Taylor Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. very minor edge wear to top and bottom of spine, spine very slightly sunned, slight page browning. Not clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 226pp, illustrated. An analysis of the murder of the distinguished architect Frances Mawson Rattenbury. In the early hours of 23rd March 1935, Rattenbury was discovered in his sitting room with severe head injuries. He had sustained a series of blows with a carpenter's mallet, the blows savage enough to remove the back of his skull, He died four days later. His second wife Alma confessed, but her lover, the 18 year old chauffeur George Percy Stoner admitted to the housekeeper that it was actually he who had carried out the deed. Alma Rattenbury and Stoner were both charged, although Alma was to retract her confession after her elder son Christopher visited her in prison. Stoner was convicted and sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment following the submission to the Home Secretary of a petition signed by over 300,000 people who felt that the young man had been manipulated into committing murder by the older woman. Alma was acquitted of murder and of being an accessory after the fact, but committed suicide a few days later, stabbing herself six times in the breast with a penknife before drowning in a marshland pool by the River Avon at Christchurch. Stoner served only seven years of his sentence, being released early in order to join the army and fight in the Second World War. He married in 1944, and fathered a daughter in 1948. He and his wife led "a quiet life" in the Bournemouth area, although he was to briefly attract the attention of the media again when convicted of indecently assaulting a 12 year-old boy in a washroom in 1990. It is possible Stoner was already suffering from Alzheimer's Disease at the time of the offence; he died aged 83 at Christchurch Hospital in 2000. The case report is studied by law students throughout the world where common law applies. Despite Francis Rattenbury's outstanding career as an architect, he was buried in an unmarked grave, in a cemetery close to his home in Bournemouth. In 2007, 72 years later, a headstone was erected as a lasting memorial, paid for by a family friend.

Francis Mawson Rattenbury met Alma Pakenham in Canada, in 1923 and fell in love. Alma was beautiful, talented and exotic. Still in her twenties, she already had lost one husband in the war and divorced a second. She had served as a transport driver and nurse at the front, where she was twice wounded. An accomplished musician, Alma was visiting Victoria from her home in Vancouver to give a recital, but within weeks of their meeting she had set up shop in the capital as a music teacher. Alma and Rattenbury carried on their affair openly, with no concern for public opinion or for his wife, Florence's feelings. When Florence refused to grant him a divorce, Rattenbury began entertaining his mistress at the family home in Oak Bay. Florence finally gave in and granted Rattenbury his divorce. In the spring of 1925, he and Alma married. But their affair had left them social pariahs, even after they had a son and settled into a respectable domesticity. At the end of 1929 they packed up and moved to England, settling in Bournemouth. England was not a cure for Rattenbury's discontent. As the years passed, he became a sulky, impotent, alcoholic old man, burdened with financial worries. Alma, on the other hand, was still young and enjoying success as the composer of popular songs. Inevitably, she took a lover, and her choice showed her usual carelessness. George Stoner was an 18-year-old school dropout, hired to be Rattenbury's chauffeur. Besotted with Alma, jealous of her husband, afraid that the two might reconcile and toss him out, he was a ticking bomb waiting to go off. Laid in are four news clippings relating to this subject.
