This book provides an insight into the early 19th century power struggles between Russia and the Ottoman Empire in the Caucasus by presenting a journal kept by an Englishman during an expedition into Circassia, a mountainous region of the Northwest Caucuses. The author's mission was to establish connections with local chiefs and assess the potential for a British -Circassian alliance against Russia. Given free rein to travel the land and speak to its people, the author provides unique historical accounts of the Circassians, their customs, and their fierce resistance to Russian advances. His narrative is ripe with descriptions of battles, feasts, Circassian poetry, and songs. The author details the Circassians' desire for an alliance with Britain in their fight for independence from Russia. The book provides an insightful exploration of the region's geopolitical dynamics, providing context to the historical tensions between Russia and its neighboring nations.
