This book narrates the eventful Sicilian Luogotenency (1849-59) of Carlo Filangieri, general and minister who led the Bourbon restoration in Sicily following its failed bid for independence in 1848. The author, a respected historian, draws upon vast documentation, including Filangieri's own writings and private correspondence, to chronicle the period, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of the complex challenges the general faced. The book sheds light on Filangieri's efforts to restore order and revive the island's economy amidst political tensions, while striving to reconcile Sicily with the Bourbon monarchy. Through Filangieri's story, the author explores the broader themes of Italian unification, the struggle between liberalism and conservatism, and the intricate relationship between Sicily and mainland Italy during this pivotal era.
