Focusing primarily on the earliest, pre-medieval codices, the author traces the development and transmission of Horace's works across generations of scribes. The author presents an overview of the tradition of copying by hand, and the ways in which the works of Roman poets and writers were altered, misinterpreted, and corrected over time by their scribes. Drawing on the author's deep understanding of paleography, philology, and the history of literature, this book reveals the fascinating story of a classic work.
