It focuses on the period from 1872 to 1873 and discusses the challenges of linking the country's east and west coasts by rail. Land surveys were key to deciding the route, and the book describes expeditions through unexplored mountain passes and along coastal inlets to find the most feasible path for the line. The author discusses the relative merits of different routes, key considerations such as water supply, and the influence of factors like avalanches and rockfalls on engineering decisions. The book delivers a detailed historical account of the work that went into planning this vital piece of infrastructure, providing insights into the engineering and political considerations that shaped the development of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
