This book records the lives, times, and ancestral lines of the Hildreth family from their origins in England, through the 17th century, and up to the Revolution. The author draws from cited sources including deeds, wills, and public records from the time period, as well as the narrative histories of their descendants written in the 19th century. The text is organized chronologically, proceeding through several generations of the Hildreth family, with special focus on the life of Richard Hildreth, the first of the line to settle in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and his son James, who served in the forces of Cromwell during his war against Scotland.
