It argues that the crux of the divide was and is the relative weight each gives to tradition and scripture as sources of religious authority. The Church of Rome holds that both scripture and tradition are equally authoritative. But the Church of England holds that scripture alone is authoritative. This difference has far-reaching implications, as the author demonstrates through a detailed analysis of the doctrinal articles of each church. The author concludes that the Church of England's rejection of tradition as a source of authority has led it to a more rational and enlightened understanding of Christianity.
