It belongs to the Geste de Guillaume d'Orange, a significant literary cycle that chronicles the exploits of the hero Guillaume au Court Nez ("William the Short-Nosed") and his family. The poem narrates the Battle of Aliscans, a pivotal clash between the Christian forces led by Guillaume and the Saracen army under their leader, Abderame. After an intense battle, Guillaume and his men are defeated. Guillaume escapes back to his city of Orange, where he confronts grief, despair, and a profound moral crisis. However, through the intercession of his nephew Vivien, who offers him absolution, Guillaume finds redemption and regains his fighting spirit. The book offers insights into the feudal society, religious beliefs, and military culture of medieval France.
