This book centers on the significance of mythologies in Roman culture by examining the ways in which Ovid draws on Greek mythological themes in his Metamorphoses. The author argues that Ovid's use of these myths is highly creative and sophisticated, using a complex web of allusions, echoes, and variations in order to create a unique and original work that both complements and challenges its sources. Ovid's fascination with the Greek myths is shown to be part of a wider interest in mythology among Roman writers of the Augustan period, and this book explores the broader cultural and historical context of Ovid's work.
