The items in this anthology were donated to the Auckland library by Sir George Grey, a former governor of New Zealand with an insatiable appetite for knowledge and collecting. Sir Greyâs library collections have been described as the best of their kind to be found in the whole of the Australasian colonies. Auckland citizens can certainly feel a sense of pride when visiting their library, knowing that the collection gifted by Sir Grey is of such national and international significance. The contents are divided into three sections: manuscripts, documents and autographed letters; foreign books printed during the 15th and 16th centuries; and books printed in England during the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. Highlights include lessons from the gospels, written in the 10th or 11th century, the four gospels, written in 1128, a Latin Bible from 1419, the Book of Hours, written on vellum in the 15th century, and a commentary on the Book of Job by Gregory the Great, bound in a 15th century binding for Henry V, King of England. Also in the collection are documents relating to the native races of New Zealand and South Africa. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
