Hardcover. Condición: Good. The MIT Press, Published 1978. Hardcover, xi, 410 pp.; 24 cm; third printing (first published 1973). In Good condition, no dust jacket. Light brown cloth boards, silver lettering on spine. Light to moderate overall shelf and surface wear, with scuffing and soiling to covers, some color loss along edges, and fading to spine; 1/2-inch thin tear to cloth along top edge of front cover near spine. Binding tight. Mild foxing along top edge of text block. Pages clean and unmarked. Kuno's study of Japanese syntax, third in MIT Press's Current Studies in Linguistics series (Samuel Jay Keyser, general editor). Rather than a comprehensive reference grammar, it concentrates on the features that set Japanese apart, and on sentences that conventional grammars would allow but native speakers reject; Kuno's preface calls it "a grammar of ungrammatical sentences." Chapters are marked for three audiences: students and teachers of Japanese, linguists who know some Japanese, and linguists with none. Topics include the particles wa and ga (for which Kuno's terms "exhaustive listing" and "neutral description" remain in use), giving and receiving verbs, temporal and conditional clauses, relative clauses, the reflexive zibun, case marking, and word order. Kuno (b. 1933) spent his career at Harvard, where he is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics. Contents: Foreword; Preface; I Introduction: Typological Characteristics of Japanese; II Particles: Wa and Ga (Part I): Theme, Contrast, Exhaustive Listing, and Neutral Description; Wa and Ga (Part II): Subjectivization; Ga for Object Marking; Place Particles O, Ni, and De; To Au and Ni Au; Made, Made Ni, and Made De; Coordinating Particles To, Ni, and Ya; III Verbs: Giving and Receiving Verbs; Stative and Nonstative Verbals; IV Temporal and Conditional Clauses: Before Clauses in Uti Ni and Mae Ni; After Clauses in Te Kara, Ato De, Ato Ni, and Ato; Assertive Nara Clauses; Perfective Tara Clauses; To as a Temporal Particle; The -Te Gerundive Form and the -I Continuative Form; Degrees of Subordination; V Nominal and Adjectival Clauses: Koto, No, and To; No Desu 'It Is That'; Relative Clauses; Themes and Relative Clauses; Tense in Relative Clauses; VI Deictics: Yes, No, and Pronouns: Yes and No; The Anaphoric Use of Kore, Sore, and Are; The Reflexive Pronoun and the Passive and Causative Constructions; The Reflexive Pronoun and Internal Feeling; VII Case Marking and Word Order: Case Marking in Japanese; The Position of Locatives in Existential Sentences; References; Index.…
