In its early years, the church met in several locations before constructing its first building in 1820. That structure was replaced in 1833 and again in 1845 after a fire. This fourth church building was destroyed in The Great Fire of 1845. In 1858, a baptistry was added to the church. In 1865, the church building and lot were sold, and a new location was purchased. The chapel on Fourth Avenue was dedicated in 1867, and the larger church building on Ross Street was completed in 1876. The present church building, designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, was dedicated in 1912. The book contains reminiscences from long-time members and attendees, as well as photographs of the building and its members. Through the author's thorough examination of church records and interviews with members, this book reveals several overarching themes: the importance of community and evangelism within the church, strategies for adapting to a changing membership, and the impact of the church's social and economic environment on its ministry. Despite the book's focus on a single congregation, its insights into the challenges, contributions, and central role of churches in the lives of their communities resonate with a broader audience.
