Arrison, a medical student, had a falling out with Allison and was heard threatening his life before constructing an infernal machine that he sent to Allison. Allison's wife opened the package, resulting in a fatal explosion. Despite initially evading capture, Arrison was eventually tracked down. On appeal, his conviction was overturned due to technicalities, but he was retried and sentenced to ten years in prison. The author explores the case within the context of other 19th-century trials, highlighting evolving legal perspectives on intent and insanity. Through this infamous crime, the book delves into themes of premeditation, guilt, and the complexities of the justice system, offering insights into the challenges of ensuring both justice and fairness in criminal proceedings.
