This book brilliantly tells the stories of some of the key Rabbis who lived in the turbulent first two centuries C.E., the formative period of the Jewish people. The book, drawing on a rich body of historical material, gives a vivid insight into the development of Judaism during a period of great social and political upheaval. The author places particular emphasis on the teachings and lives of Hillel, Jochanan ben Zakkai, Joshua ben Chananya, Akiva, Meir, Simeon ben Yochai, Judah the Prince and others. Each man is portrayed as a complex and fascinating personality, whose story offers glimpses into the social and religious landscape of the times. These stories reveal the struggles, triumphs, and profound insights of these great spiritual leaders. Their ideas provided the foundations of rabbinic Judaism, shaping Jewish thought and practice for centuries to come.
