Though relatively unknown to the present day, the songs in this book provide insights into the growing temperance movement of the time. Many of the songs use the persona of a drunkard to highlight the evils of alcohol, while others center on the importance of resisting temptation, specifically as it pertains to alcohol. Songwriters of the time used the medium of music to influence popular opinion and bolster the movement for statewide prohibition. Though prohibition would not become law until 1920, the passion of these songwriters, preachers, politicians, and community organizers is demonstrated in this catalog of temperance songs. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
