The author argues that the movement's prohibitionist stance was not supported by scripture and that its methods were often coercive and intolerant. The author examines the historical and cultural context of the temperance movement, showing how it emerged from a broader evangelical revival that sought to reform American society. The author also engages with the theological arguments of the movement, arguing that its prohibitionist stance was a distortion of Christian principles. Ultimately, the author concludes that the temperance movement did more harm than good, dividing churches, alienating potential converts, and creating a climate of fear and suspicion that hindered the spread of the gospel.
