Hardcover. First edition. Inscribed in the year of publication on the title page in blue ink: "Steve -- It's great seeing you again after all this time. David Mech, 12/5/03." With a foreword by George Rabb. From the jacket: "In Wolves, may of the world's leading experts provide state-of-the-art coverage of just about eveything y…ou could want to know about these fascinating creatures. . Unrivaled in scope and comprehensiveness, Wolves will become the definitive resource on these extraordinary animals for scientists and amateurs alike." L. David Mech is senior research scientist for the US Geological Survey with a specialty in wolves, and he is the founder of the International Wolf Center. He is the author or co-author of eleven books on wolves and other wildlife. He was Durward Allen's graduate student at Purdue from 1958 to 1962 and helped launch the groundbreaking study of wolves and moose on Isle Royale. Starting in 1986 he then spent 25 summers observing wolves on large Ellesmere Island in northernmost Canada, in a sense replicating and expanding his experience at Isle Royale. Among other documentation of the Ellesmere wolves, he co-produced a film about his experience for National Geographic. His co-editor in this book, Luigi Boitani, is a professor of zoology at the Sapienza University of Rome, and president of the Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe. A heavy quarto in black paper boards and black cloth spine. Fine with one small white spot on front board; still fine, with sharp corners. In a fine jacket. A new unread book.
