Born in Tallinn, Estonia, he later moved to Germany, where he studied painting and German studies. Gernhardt was a prominent figure in German literary and artistic circles, contributing to satirical magazines such as Pardon and Titanic. His poetry and prose often combined wit with philosophical depth, making him a key voice in postwar German literature. Almut Gernhardt (Ullrich) (1940 - 1989) was an artist and illustrator, best known for her collaborations with Robert Gernhardt, particularly in children's books. Her work often features surreal and whimsical elements, blending realism with fantasy. While less documented than Robert, Almut's distinctive illustrative style has been praised for its imaginative and humorous qualities.
