Just what are these carefully arranged boulders? Several scientists have claimed they are evidence that prehistoric communities devised their own geometry and units of length, invented accurate methods of observing the sun and the moon, produced a calendar, and predicted eclipses. In this book the evidence for and against the geometrical and astronomical hypotheses is collected and assessed, and though the writer considers the case proved, the presentation permits the reader to make his own judgement. The great public interest in this early period has been inadequately served by existing books, which tend to be either too difficult for the non~specialist or superficial and sensational. Dr. Wood is concerned to distinguish fact from fiction. The approach is scientific but with a minimum of mathematics. He assumes no previous knowledge of astronomy and gives all the necessary background information on the movements of the sun and the moon so that archaeologists can see how to check sites for possible alignments. Several famous sites, such as Stonehenge and Carnac, and many less well known ones, are described in detail and reinterpreted in the light of the new ideas. The final part of the book looks at the impact of the astronomical theory on our understanding of the Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages and summarizes the suggestions which have been put forward for the reevaluation of prehistoric societies in northwest Europe.
