Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Good. Virtual Light (1994) by William Gibson Penguin Books | ISBN: 9780140157727 Condition: Good As sold by Crappy Old Books There are futures that arrive in polished silver jumpsuits with obedient robots and reassuring faith in progress. Then there is William Gibson?s future, which tends to turn up wearing stolen shades, carrying dubious data, and looking as though civilisation has been subcontracted to opportunists, corporations, and people living in improvised architecture. Virtual Light is very much that sort of future: grimy, stylish, half-broken, and entirely convincing. By 1994 Gibson had already done more than most writers to define the look and feel of cyberpunk, that wonderfully influential literary mode in which technology gets smarter, cities get stranger, and human beings remain reliably chaotic. Virtual Light takes those familiar Gibson ingredients and relocates them into a near-future California where information is power, infrastructure is unstable, and the social order has developed all the tidy elegance of a dropped toolbox. At the centre of it all is a pair of high-tech glasses, because in Gibson?s world no object is ever merely an object. Everything hums with hidden systems, black-market value, and the possibility that some apparently minor item may in fact be the key to dangerous knowledge. From there the novel unfolds through couriers, ex-cops, drifters, predators, and assorted survivors navigating a world where technology has not solved human problems so much as made them faster, stranger, and more expensive. One of Gibson?s great gifts is that he writes the future as though it has already happened and nobody had time to issue a brochure. His worlds are never neat thought experiments. They are lived-in places full of clutter, side effects, hacked-together adaptations, and people trying to get by inside systems they only partly understand. That texture is what makes his fiction so rich. He does not merely imagine gadgets. He imagines what those gadgets do to streets, jobs, power, crime, desire, and ordinary life. And then there is the style. Gibson writes with that cool, compressed precision that can make a sentence feel like both a bit of street poetry and a warning label. He has always had a rare talent for making the reader feel slightly behind the curve in exactly the right way, as though the world is moving quickly and one had better keep up. This is not cosy science fiction with explanatory handrails. It expects you to step in, look around, and work things out while the city glows ominously in the background. Virtual Light also has the peculiar pleasure of being a past vision of the future. Read now, it offers the double charm of a gripping near-future thriller and a fascinating time capsule of 1990s anxieties about media, networks, surveillance, urban decay, and fractured authority. Gibson was often less interested in prediction than in atmosphere, but he had a troubling habit of being right about the mood of things long before the details arrived. This 1994 Penguin edition comes from exactly the right moment: close enough to the original period to retain the full charge of its era, and now old enough to feel satisfyingly of that age when cyberpunk still seemed like tomorrow rather than the prehistory of our current digital absurdities. It sits very comfortably among the paperbacks of readers who like their fiction sharp-edged, intelligent, and just a little bit dangerous. This copy is in good condition , showing the expected signs of age and reading but remaining sound, presentable, and entirely ready for another trip through Gibson?s fractured future. It has weathered time rather well, which is more than can be said for many of the societies in his novels. An excellent choice for readers of cyberpunk, speculative fiction, near-future thrillers, and anyone who enjoys technology in fiction only when accompanied by social decay, cool menace, and excellent prose. Virtual Light is smart, stylish, unsettling, and full of the sort of future that never really goes away ? it just changes brands and gets better Wi-Fi.
