Añadir al carrito1st edition Dr Dodd, nicknamed "The Macaroni Parson" because of his dandyish dress, was one of the most popular preachers of the eighteenth century. A prolific author, flamboyant oratorm, busy socialite and celebrity, his colourful image hid an unhappy truth of a reputation cobbled together with unkept promises and mounting debts. In 1777 he was charged with forgery and condemned to death. This led to a wave of sympathy and a campaign to petition the King, but also led to more open debate about the extent and nature of capital punishment itself. Pp.264, 11 black & white illustrations, owner's details to front free endpaper, toning to endpapers. Purple cloth, dustwrapper has sunning to spine and rear top edge. VG/G+.
