Freeman John Dyson FRS (15 December 1923 28 February 2020) was a British-American theoretical physicist and mathematician known for his work in quantum field theory, astrophysics, random matrices, mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and engineering. He was professor emeritus in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. During WWII, he was assigned to war work in the Operational Research Section (ORS) of RAF Bomber Command, where he developed analytical methods for calculating the ideal density for bomber formations to help the Royal Air Force bomb German targets. He was awarded the 1996 Lewis Thomas Prize and the 2000 Templeton Prize. Derived from a Kirkus review: The debate over nuclear weapons threatens to get stuck between polemics and impenetrable technical arguments, and no one is better suited to get it unstuck than physicist Dyson--writing in a meditative, anecdotal, iconoclastic manner. As both a Defense Department advisor and a participant in antinuclear meetings, Dyson feels he can bridge the gap between the "victims," the people-at-large who view war in un-technical human terms, and the "warriors," the professionals who affect an air of unemotional detachment. Dyson tells the story of his uncle Freeman, an English public school master killed in the WW I trenches, and his father, who wrote a manual on grenades without ever throwing one in combat. While Dyson's father touted the grenades' ingenious uses--as if they'd been developed at the front, not in experiments--Uncle Freeman was concerned with non-technical matters like the rats in the trenches. Again, the point is simple but effectively made: we don't know what nuclear war is like, and we should beware of acting as if we do. The effects of WW II aerial bombing failed to match projections based on WW I, Dyson notes; for one thing, the mental breakdowns failed to materialize: bombing had become commonplace. So he is careful in arguing for a nonnuclear world. He pins his hopes on small, high-technology conventional weapons, specifically on a conventional ABM system coupled to satellite monitoring. Such a setup, tied to treaties eliminating nuclear weapons, would be able to protect against the treaties' violation. Dyson opposes the arms-controller orthodoxy of mutual assured destruction, or deterrence. Today's great threat, he believes, comes from tactical nuclear weapons, not from the almost obsolete hydrogen bombs. There is, he says, a constituency of warriors who can make do with less; and he is careful to spell out the dangers of denuclearization for world peace: hence, the emphasis on armed peace and strong conventional defenses.
