Summary:The scholarly tradition which the author represents sees the history of religions as a discipline historically grounded, philogically informed and independent of the claims of the theology and philosophy of religion. These latter claims, in his view, have served often to misdirect and confuse attempts to construct a truly scientific study of the history of religions. The chief argument of these lectures emerges clearly in the three final lectures. "Religion in the singular is an abstraction of metaphysics or theology, inherited from the age of Rationalism, from German Idealism and Romanticism. I think here especially of Hegel and Schleiermacher. Thus, 'religion' is a loaded term and any historian who adopts it without testing is thereby dependent upon a philosophical or theological theory.".

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, handschriftliche Anmerkungen auf Schmutztitel, sonst guter Zustand / dust jacket rubbed, handwritten annotations on half title, otherwise good condition. - "For the historian of religions there is, strictly speaking, no one religion at all. There are only religions." This book, based on Kurt Rudolph's Haskell Lectures at the University of Chicago, epitomizes 200 years of German scholarship in the history of religions (Religionswissenschaff). The scholarly tradition which the author represents sees the history of religions as a discipline historically grounded, philologically informed, and independent of the claims of the theology and philosophy of religion. These latter claims, in his view, have served often to misdirect and confuse attempts to construct a truly scientific study of the history of religions. Rudolph's first lecture provides a synopsis of Religionswissenschaft, particularly at Leipzig, where his own formative years were spent, and where in 1961 he was appointed to the chair of the history of religions. The second lecture spells out in some detail the author's own conception of the history of religions, particularly in regard to the relations that should hold between the several approaches to the history of religions. Rudolph discusses the "historical study of religions" as a "longitudinal enterprise" (Religionsgeschichte), the phenomenology of religion as identical with the comparative study of religions, and the contributions made to Religionswissenschaft by the allied but distinct fields of the psychology of religions and the sociology of religions. The chief argument of these lectures emerges clearly in the three final lectures. "Religion in the singular is an abstraction of metaphysics or theology, inherited from the age of Rationalism, from German Idealism and Romanticism. I think here especially of Hegel and Schleiermacher. Thus 'Religion' is a loaded term and any historian who adopts it without testing is thereby dependent upon a philosophical or theological theory." For Rudolph the struggle for the autonomy of the history of religions is of paramount importance. His book, however, is no ghostly parade of concepts. Here are the great German and European scholars in the systematic and historical traditions: Weber, Troeltsch, Durkheim, Otto, Baetke, Van der Leeuw, Von Harnack, Eliade, Heiler, and Wach. The importance of autonomy for the history of religions is manifest in Rudolph's report on the ouster, in 1934, of Wach from Leipzig by the Nazis, and the attempt, this time by the communists in 1958, to transform the Institute for the History of Religions into an institute for "Atheistic Research and Propaganda." The fourth and fifth lectures treat respectively the "critique of ideologies" and the problem of development from the viewpoint of the history of religions. Students of the history of religions will find the book to be a skilled and engaging guide through the frequently forbidding vocabulary and conceptual complexity of the German tradition of religious scholarship. / Contents Introduction by Joseph M. Kitagawa Preface Lecture One: The Leipzig Tradition of Religionswissenschaft Lecture Two: The Structure and Purpose of the History of Religions: Its Role in the Humanities Lecture Three: The Autonomy and Integrity of the History of Religions Lecture Four: The History of Religions and the Critique of Ideologies Lecture Five: Development as a Problem for the History of Religions Notes Index.
