Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Fair. Introducing A Frenzy of Merchantmen (1977) by Alistair MacLean , published by Fontana , ISBN: 0006154247 ? offered in Fair condition by Crappy Old Books, complete with a slanted spine , which is honestly the most nautical thing a paperback can do without actually getting wet. Now, before anyone boards expecting torpedoes, Arctic spray and men quietly dying with dignity: this is MacLean doing something slightly different. A Frenzy of Merchantmen is one of his non-fiction works ? MacLean stepping out from behind the exploding helicopters and deadpan heroes to talk about the real-world business of ships, trade, sea lanes, and the kind of maritime history that keeps civilisation supplied with tea, coal, bananas and the vague illusion that everything is under control. It?s also, crucially, MacLean. Which means even when he?s being factual, there?s a sense that the sea is always one squall away from swallowing your optimism, and that human enterprise is largely an elaborate attempt to move things from one place to another without being murdered by weather, economics, or geography. The title alone is doing excellent work. ?A Frenzy of Merchantmen? sounds like an outbreak. Like merchant shipping has become a medical condition. Like somewhere a respectable harbour master is being told, ?I?m afraid it?s merchantmen, and it?s spreading.? But it also captures something true: the sheer chaos and scale of maritime trade during the great surges of empire, industry, war and expansion ? when the oceans were busy in a way that now feels almost impossible to imagine. Expect: Ships, routes, cargoes, ports, and the muscular logistics of the world economy Stories of risk, endurance, and the quietly heroic labour of getting stuff delivered The odd brush with disaster, because the sea never misses a chance That MacLean sense that even a ?normal? voyage is one paperwork error away from catastrophe And if you like your history with salt in it ? this is full of it. Now, about this copy. This one is Fair condition , which means it?s still absolutely readable and serviceable, but it has lived a bit. It may have been read on trains, in armchairs, in bed, or in the sort of places where people keep ?interesting books? for when they want to feel industrious. The slanted spine tells you it?s been stored at an angle, handled often, or leaned on by the weight of other paperbacks with equally strong opinions about the mid-20th century. In other words: it looks like a book that has done some miles. Which suits the subject perfectly. A book about merchant shipping that?s a bit battered is essentially method acting. A pristine copy would feel suspiciously unearned. Who?s it for? Fans of MacLean who want to see him in ?serious? mode (still with tension humming underneath) Readers who enjoy maritime history, trade routes, and the grim romance of the working sea Anyone who has ever looked at a container ship and thought: that is quietly insane, isn?t it? Collectors of Fontana editions and 1970s non-fiction paperbacks with proper heft So if you want a brisk, salty, quietly dramatic account of the merchant fleets that made the modern world possible ? told by a writer who can make a cargo manifest feel faintly threatening ? this is your book. Fair condition. Slanted spine. Full of ships. Crappy Old Books proudly supplies the frenzy ? and the merchantmen ? slightly listing, but still very much afloat.
