Unlike so many of them, he was a true field naturalist, and all his work, even the popular books by which he earned his living, is pervaded with his own, often new, observations. He was the father of sea-shore studies and of the aquarium, his writings on the sea-anemone and rotifer still being read today. His books on Canada, Alabama and Jamaica are early examples of genuine observation, rather than mere collecting. His illustrations to his own books, especially the coloured ones, are always of high quality and in many cases outstanding. Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, and a connected history of their composition and development. Editions published since his death in 1898 are listed, together with a selection of works about him and a review of the translations published in his lifetime.
