Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Man's search for wealth has taken him to many out-of-the-way places. What is now Jackson's Hole was a way of life to the Native Americans who summered here and wintered in the lower and warmer regions to the east of Togwotee Pass. A summer in this secluded valley meant plenty of fish and other wildlife for food, skins for clothing and teepees, as well as a cool, well-watered environment.Snowmelt-fed streams bordered by vegetation supported many beaver and other fur-bearers that attracted men of European descent in their never-ending quest for commercial wealth. Mountain men and trappers considered the natural resources of the area as there to be taken for their own personal gain, By 1840 beaver became scarce and fell from fashion. The land that supported bison was thought good for domestic cattle, so ranchers settled in Jackson Hole from one end to the other. Dry years and the Great Depression forced many of them to sell out.Now millions of visitors come each year to recapture the thrill of wandering in a land still much as the Native Americans left it. This is a new wealth that depreciates little under protection as a National Park.An increasing number of people look for ways to identify themselves with those who led the way into this new land. "Campfire Tales of Jackson Hole" give you this opportunity in an easy to read text that takes you back to the people and evens that transpired in the valley. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In Supernatural Horror in Literature, H. P. Lovecraft praised the story Great God Pan, saying: "No one could begin to describe the cumulative suspense and ultimate horror with which every paragraph abounds"; he added that "the sensitive reader" reaches the end with "an appreciative shudder." Arthur Machen had a substantial career as a novelist and storyteller, but nothing he did in the course of a lifetime made the impact he made in 1890 with _The Great God Pan._ The tale literally caused a furor in London -- for it seemed to many readers to bring horror and prurient sexuality together in a way that echoed their moment, foreshadowing the decadence of our own. Arthur Machen's novel made a huge impact in 1890 with this tale that literally caused a furor in London by readers who believed the horrific events he described were real. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Winner of the World Fantasy Award, here is Brian McNaughton's masterpiece-The Throne of Bones."You hold in your hands a book of stories that forced Brian McNaughton to write. Make no mistake: I don't exaggerate. There's a reason this book won the World Fantasy Award. The stories inside it are rich, fascinating stuff--creepy and unsettling and phantasmic. Imagine what Tolkien's Lord of the Rings would have been like if Tolkien had tried to tell that story sympathetically from the point of view of the human denizens of Mordor and you'll have the slightest sense of what you're about to wade into--but only just a sense. These stories will make the same demands on you that they made on Brian: they will command and compel you, and fill you full of terrible wonder. And when you've finished them you'll find yourself wanting more." --Alan Rodgers Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Part of the agreement allowed Webb to travel to India on his way back to America and visit cities with large Muslim populations. This work encompasses his travels, including: his departure from Manila, sea voyages, stays in Singapore and Penang, and most notably, the more than two months that he spent amongst the Muslims of Rangoon, Calcutta, Bombay, Poona, Hyderabad, and Madras. During Webb's travels he met with many prominent members of the Indian Muslim community, and presented lectures on Islam to large audiences. As an American Muslim, and one of the first converts in North America to Islam, his first-person accounts provide a unique perspective and historical account of Colonial India and Indian Muslims in particular. A primary document that will prove invaluable in studying the early Muslim history of the United States and its relationship to India. Complete with historical Introduction, Notes, Bibliography, and detailed Index. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A virtuous footman embarks on a journey through 18th-century England, confronting hypocrisy and moral corruption. Through a series of misadventures, he encounters a range of characters that expose the absurdities of social pretensions and the complexities of human behavior. This work blends humor and social commentary to critique the affectations of the time. Henry Fielding's comic novel "Joseph Andrews" was originally published in 1742 in two volumes. A takeoff on Samuel Richardson's "Pamela," it follows Pamela's brother Joseph in the model of the Tory satirists of the previous generation. Although begun as a parody, it became an accomplished novel and marks the beginning of Fielding's career as a serious novelist. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. "Niccolo di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 - 1527) was an Italian Renaissance historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, humanist, and writer. He has often been called the founder of modern political science. He was for many years a senior official in the Florentine Republic, with responsibilities in diplomatic and military affairs. He also wrote comedies, carnival songs, and poetry. His personal correspondence is renowned in the Italian language. He was secretary to the Second Chancery of the Republic of Florence from 1498 to 1512, when the Medici were out of power. He wrote his most renowned work The Prince (Il Principe) in 1513. ""Machiavellianism"" is a widely used negative term to characterize unscrupulous politicians of the sort Machiavelli described most famously in The Prince. Machiavelli described immoral behavior, such as dishonesty and killing innocents, as being normal and effective in politics. He even seemed to endorse it in some situations. The book itself gained notoriety when some readers claimed that the author was teaching evil, and providing ""evil recommendations to tyrants to help them maintain their power."" The term ""Machiavellian"" is often associated with political deceit, deviousness, and realpolitik. On the other hand, many commentators, such as Baruch Spinoza, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Denis Diderot, have argued that Machiavelli was actually a Republican, even when writing The Prince, and his writings were an inspiration to Enlightenment proponents of modern democratic political philosophy." Together these essays, the patents, and selected images provide a clear description of Lumia, what Wilfred described as "the eighth art." Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Probably McCulley's second most popular character (after Zorro), the Black Star is a criminal mastermind -- the kind once termed a "gentleman criminal." He does not commit murder, nor does he permit any of his gang to kill -- not even the police or his arch enemy, Roger Verbeck. Black Star does not threaten women, always keeps his word, and is invariably courteous. Nor does he deal with narcotics in any of his stories. He is always seen in a black cloak and a black hood on which is embossed a jet black star. The Black Star and his gang use "vapor bombs" and "vapor guns" to render their victims instantly unconscious, a technique which pre-dated the Green Hornet's gas gun by several decades. The Black Star first appeared in the Street & Smith pulp Detective Story Magazine on 5 March 1916. The stories proved very popular, and some were reprinted by Chelsea House in a series of inexpensive hardback books. The character's last original story appeared in 1930.
