Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 207 pages, illustrations; 21 cm. Documents of Contemporary Art Series. Tight, clean copy. Previous owner's blind stamp/flyleaf, otherwise unmarked. *** "Art that seeks to produce situations in which relations are formed among viewers is placed in historical and theoretical context in key writings by critics and artists. The desire to move viewers out of the role of passive observers and into the role of producers is one of the hallmarks of twentieth-century art. This tendency can be found in practices and projects ranging from El Lissitzky's exhibition designs to Allan Kaprow's happenings, from minimalist objects to installation art. More recently, this kind of participatory art has gone so far as to encourage and produce new social relationships. Guy Debord's celebrated argument that capitalism fragments the social bond has become the premise for much relational art seeking to challenge and provide alternatives to the discontents of contemporary life. This publication collects texts that place this artistic development in historical and theoretical context. Participation begins with writings that provide a theoretical framework for relational art, with essays by Umberto Eco, Bertolt Brecht, Roland Barthes, Peter Bürger, Jen-Luc Nancy, Edoaurd Glissant, and Félix Guattari, as well as the first translation into English of Jacques Rancière's influential 'Problems and Transformations in Critical Art.' The book also includes central writings by such artists as Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, Joseph Beuys, Augusto Boal, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. And it features recent critical and curatorial debates, with discussions by Lars Bang Larsen, Nicolas Bourriaud, Hal Foster, and Hans-Ulrich Obrist. Copublished with Whitechapel Art Gallery, London." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The first of four special publications to accompany a year-long display of works from Barcelona's 'la Caixa' Collection at Whitechapel Gallery, selected by and featuring newlycommissioned fictional works by some of the most original English and Spanish-language writers working today.Established in Barcelona in 1985 by Fundacion 'la Caixa', the 'la Caixa' Collection of Contemporary Art features over 1,000 works of international contemporary art from the last 30 years, including artists such as Antoni Tapies, Joseph Beuys, Cornelia Parker and Doris Salcedo. For a major four-part display running from 2019-20, Whitechapel Gallery has partnered with 'la Caixa' Collection to showcase key pieces from the Collection, with each of the four 'chapters' curated by a contemporary writer, who will also contribute a brand new work of fiction in response to their selection. Each display will be accompanied by a fullyillustrated catalogue featuring the works displayed and the new text, accompanied by a foreword and introduction from both institutions. The first chapter, on display in Spring 2019, will be selected by the award-winning Spanish novelist Enrique Vila-Matas (b. Barcelona, 1948; lives and works in Barcelona), who has been described by The New Yorker as 'arguably Spain's most significant contemporary literary figure'. His work is often described as metafiction, a form of writing frequently used to examine the relationship between art and life. Vila-Matas' books include Because She Never Asked (2015, originally written for Sophie Calle), The Illogic of Kassel (2014), Dublinesque (2010) and Bartleby & Co (2000), and his new book, titled Mac y su contratiempo (Mac's Problem) will be released in English in April 2019, coinciding with the display at Whitechapel Gallery. Vila-Matas has selected works by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Miquel Barcelo, Dora Garcia, Carlos Pazos and Gerhard Richter. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The first publication on London-based artist Andrew Pierre Hart, published to accompany his major commission at Whitechapel Gallery. Featuring new writing by Allie Biswas and Gilane Tawadros, as well as a conversation between Hart and artist Larry Achiampong. Both a visual artist and an electronic music producer, Andrew Pierre Hart has consistently explored the interrelationship between sound and painting. An illustrated essay by writer Allie Biswas discusses how Hart materialises these overlapping sensory qualities across recent exhibitions and artworks. Curator and director Gilane Tawadros introduces Hart's new commission, which is grounded in Hart's research into the Whitechapel area and his conversations with those who live and work locally. Extensive illustrations document the resulting installation, which features colourful abstract and figurative paintings, a large-scale collaborative mural, a towering bamboo sculpture and video shot with three dancers in the streets surrounding the Gallery. Extended captions by curator Cameron Foote draw out how these imaginative artworks engage with Whitechapel's history of anti-racist activism. A conversation between Hart and artist Larry Achiampong outlines synergies between their work and their shared experiences growing up in rapidly gentrifying parts of east and west London. Hart intervenes in the book with a playful and disruptive artist's section, fusing journal-like snapshots taken in Whitechapel, and on recent trips to Nigeria and Barbados, with concrete poems, reflections and annotations that reveal the motivations surrounding his artwork. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Published on the occasion of the new Whitechapel Gallery commission for 2020 by Portuguese artist Carlos Bunga, who creates dynamic site-specific ephemeral structures.Originally training as a painter, Carlos Bunga (b. 1976 Porto, lives and works in Barcelona) uses mass-produced materials such as cardboard, adhesive tape, and household paint to produce large-scale installations. Created in dialogue with the existing architectural space, these ephemeral structures recall theatre sets, architectural models, or temporary shelters, inviting viewers to rethink their physical and emotional experience of space and architecture. By giving equal importance to creation and destruction, he also evokes the fragile nature of urban structures, with the traces of his works bringing to mind dispossession and the symbolic potential of ruins. For his new commission at Whitechapel Gallery the artist will create two different painted structures that will shift during the course of exhibition, creating a new construction that can be seen from four viewing areas with other objects and works in conversation with the space. This gesture will be complemented by inviting dancers to respond to the space before and after its transfer. The fully illustrated catalogue will include new installation photography documenting the commission. Paperback. Condición: Fine. 1st. 271 pages; 21 cm. Tight, clean copy. A fine copy of the first printing. *** "The socio-cultural impact of Andy Warhol painter, sculptor, printmaker, filmmaker, publisher, TV personality, socialite, graphic artist, collector, illustrator, rock impresario, photographer, model and author is incalculable. A pioneer in virtually every media in which he worked from his unmistakeable blotted-line advertising illustrations in the 1950s; to photography-based paintings of car wrecks and movie stars in the 1960s; to pre-Stonewall cult films that dared to explore sexually provocative subjects; to his re-invention of the celebrity magazine in the 1970s with Interview Andy Warhol also influenced such contemporary staples as reality TV, computer art and the rock-gig light show. As the inventor of the Polaroid selfie and master of the tweet-like short epithet (It's so nice to be invited to your own house by the person who's renting it you feel at home and you're still making money), Andy Warhol seems only to grow in cultural relevance in the twenty-first century." - Publisher. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. While information science draws distinctions between 'information', signals and data, artists from the 1960s to the present have questioned the validity and value of such boundaries. Artists have investigated information's materiality, in signs, records and traces; its immateriality, in hidden codes, structures and flows; its embodiment, in instructions, social interaction and political agency; its overload, or uncontrollable excess, challenging utopian notions of networked society; its potential for misinformation and disinformation, subliminally altering our perceptions; and its post-digital unruliness, unsettling fixed notions of history and place. This anthology provides the first art-historical reassessment of information-based art in relation to data structures and exhibition curation, examining landmark exhibitions and re-examining work by artists of the 1960s to early 1980s, from Les Levine and N.E.Thing Co. to General Idea and Jenny Holzer.David Askewold, Iain Baxter, Guy Bleus, Heath Bunting, CAMP (Shaina Anand & Ashok Sukumaran), Ami Clarke, Richard Cochrane, Rod Dickinson, Hans Haacke, Graham Harwood, Jenny Holzer, Joseph Kosuth, Christine Kozlov, Steve Lambert and the Yes Men, Oliver Laric, Les Levine, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Muntadas, Erhan Muratoglu, Raqs Media Collective, Erica Scourti, Stelarc, Thomson & Craighead, Angie Waller, Stephen Willats, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Elizabeth Vander Zaag.Writers include James Bridle, Matthew Fuller, Francesca Gallo, Lizzie Homersham, Antony Hudek, Eduardo Kac, Friedrich Kittler, Arthur and Marilouise Kroker, Scott Lash, Alessandro Ludovico, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Charu Maithani, Suhail Malik, Armin Medosch, Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi, Craig Saper, Jorinde Seijdel, Tom Sherman, Felix Stalder, McKenzie Wark, Benjamin Weil. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Without boredom, arguably there is no modernity: the current sense of the word emerged simultaneously with industrialisation, mass politics and consumerism. From Manet onwards, when art represents the everyday within modern life, encounters with tedium are inevitable. And from modernism's retreat into abstraction to subsequent demands placed on audiences, from the late 1960s to the present, the viewer's endurance of repetition, slowness or other forms of monotony has become an anticipated feature of gallery-going. In contemporary art, boredom is no longer viewed as a singular experience; rather, it is contingent on diverse social identifications and cultural positions, and extends from a malign condition to be struggled against, to an experience to be embraced, or explored as a site of resistance. In this anthology, the range of boredoms associated with our neoliberal moment is contextualized in a long view which encompasses the political critique of boredom in 1960s France; the simultaneous aesthetic embrace in the USA of silence, repetition or indifference in Fluxus, Pop, Minimalism and conceptual art; the development of feminist diagnoses of malaise in art, performance and film; Punk's social critique and its influence on theories of the postmodern; and the recognition from the end of the 1980s of a specific form of ennui experienced in former communist states.Today, with the emergence of new forms of labour alienation and personal intrusion, deadening forces extend even further into subjective experience, making the divide between a critical and an aesthetic use of boredom ever more tenuous.Artists surveyed include Chantal Akerman, Francis Alys, John Baldessari, Vanessa Beecroft, Bernadette Corporation, John Cage, Critical Art Ensemble, Merce Cunningham, Marcel Duchamp, Fischli & Weiss, Claire Fontaine, Dick Higgins, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Ilya Kabakov, Boris Mikhailov, Robert Morris, John Pilson, Sigmar Polke, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, Gerhard Richter, Situationist International, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Andy Warhol, Faith Wilding, Janet Zweig.Writers include Ina Blom, Nicolas Bourriaud, Jennifer Doyle, Alla Efimova, Jonathan Flatley, Julian Jason Haladyn, The Invisible Committee, Jonathan D. Katz, Chris Kraus, Tan Lin, Sven Lutticken, John Miller, Agne Narusyte, Sianne Ngai, Peter Osborne, Patrice Petro, Christine Ross, Moira Roth, David Foster Wallace, Aleksandr Zinovyev. Intrinsically collaborative, the magazine is an inherently open form, generating constantly evolving relationships. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Part of the acclaimed series of anthologies which document major themes and ideas in contemporary art. This anthology explores the ethical, aesthetic and political significance of practices, positions and theories connected to health in contemporary art.In an era of diet pills, record antidepressant usage, yoga and health-management apps, wellness is one of the defining issues of contemporary life, dictating every intimate aspect of our lives. Historically, art has been entwined with the values of medicine, beauty and the productive body that have defined the western scientific paradigms; contemporary artists are increasingly confronting and reshaping these ideologies, incorporating personal and singular approaches to vexed experiences surrounding questions of health and identity.Raw, confrontational and affective, the writings in Health engage with the ways the vulnerability of our bodies and the maladies that seize them also reveal structural aspects of our societies, particularly how sickness intersects with sexuality, ethnicity, gender and class. This reader questions the myths, stigmas and cultural attitudes that shape people's perceptions of illness and normativity.Artists surveyed include Oreet Ashery, Lorenza Boettner, The Canaries and Taraneh Fazeli, Dora Garcia, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Rashid Johnson, Mahmoud Khaled, Carolyn Lazard, Guillermo Gomez Pena, Simone Leigh, Mujeres Creando, Park McArthur, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Jo Spence, Patrick Staff, Pedro Reyes, Tabita Rezaire.Writers include Khairani Barokka, Dodie Bellamy, Rizvana Bradley, bell hooks, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Audre Lorde, Maria Puig de la Bellacasa, Susan Sontag, R.D. Laing, Paul B. Preciado. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Part of the acclaimed series of anthologies which document major themes and ideas in contemporary art. An essential collection of texts reflecting on the cultural and political complexities of translation in global contemporary artistic practices. The movement of global populations, and subsequently the task of translation, underlies contemporary culture: the intricacies of ancient and modern Jewish diaspora, waves of colonisation and the transportation of slaves are now superimposed by economic and environmental migration, forced political exiles and refugees. This timely anthology will consider translation's ongoing role in cultural navigation and understanding, exploring the approaches of artists, poets and theorists in negotiating increasingly protean identities: from the intrinsic intimacy of language, to translation's embedded structures of knowledge production and interaction, to its limitations of expression and, ultimately, its importance in a world of multiple perspectives.Artists surveyed include Meric Algun Ringborg, Geta Bratescu, Tanya Bruguera, Chto Delat, Chohreh Feyzdjou, Susan Hiller, Glenn Ligon, Teresa Margolles, Shirin Neshat, Helio Oiticica, Pratchaya Phinthong, Kurt Schwitters, Yinka Shonibare, Mladen Stilinovic, Erika Tan, Kara Walker, Wu Tsang.Writers include Hannah Arendt, James Baldwin, Walter Benjamin, Judith Butler, Luis Camnitzer, Jean Fisher, Stuart Hall, bell hooks, Sarat Maharaj, Martha Rosler, Bertrand Russell, Simon Sheikh, Gayatri Spivak, Hito Steyerl, Lawrence Venuti.
