Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Fine. NINTH EDITION. A PICTORIAL AND DESCRIPTIVE GUIDE TO PLYMOUTH and South West Devon Ward lock & Co Ltd., London N.D. Ninth Edition Revised 128pp Plus Map & Adverts. This copy is very bright and square however as noted by the tipped in apologia to pp 5 from the publishers, "due to difficult times of shortage of materials they regret, however, at present the complete set is not available for inclusion in this volume" Therefore only the map of South Devon appears facing pp 89. The earliest Ward Lock travel guides were published in 1880, but were issued on green paper boards - not in the familiar red cloth covers as we know them today. The series originally comprised 30 titles. The guides adopted their familiar red cloth covers in 1892. By the end of the century, 72 guides had been published, covering different towns and areas in England & Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Channel Islands and a number of Continental destinations. Ward and Lock noted the public's growing tendency to explore the British Isles. The ubiquity of the railway lines had played its part in the growth of the travel at holiday times and the increasingly popular "weekend". All this growing appetite for travel required catering for in more ways than in the provision of food and lodging. Gradually a great series was worked up until, eventually , every holiday district and seaside resort of consequence was covered by its own particular Guide. A special staff of qualified editors and correspondents continually toured the land, compiling and revising material on all places and matters of interest to the holiday maker and on such subjects as the local history, geology, botany and zoology of the areas concerned. Part of the charm of this collectable series are the advertisements front and rear that give a period feel for the halcyon days in the late forties when motor travel became affordable to the middle classes. Although, as with almost all the Ward Lock Red Guides this copy is undated this copy is believed to date from the mid to late 1940's, hence the effect of wartime shortages. Ref V4.
